GSD&M is using mobile marketing to push their "Do Something Amazing" campaign for the U.S. Air Force. They're promoting the campaign at events and sending messages to bluetooth-enabled products as well by sending some text messages. This sounds like an interesting idea, but I'm curious how successful it is. Especially since only a small percentage of people will be able to receive messages.

Minority Hiring Goals Are Quite Lofty

Agencies pledge to increase minority hiring. Of the 15 cited in the article, around 20% of hired professionals will be minorities. Good luck with keeping them around.

In my short life, I've been the poster child for diversity in several jobs, including the National Park Service. And I can tell you being hired based on your race makes you feel like shit. And it also puts more pressure on individuals to succeeed. I remember while at the NPS, I jumped on scaffolds, hung off ledges, picked up heavy shit and helped restore a greenhouse. I had to do more, because they told me I was being hired due to a mandate from the government telling them they had to hire minorities. It really sucked. And it made me feel different and to some degree, like I was some kind if charity case.

So when I look at the ad industry, I'm not sure how they will handle the minority issue. I think ad agencies will be able to hire minorities fairly easy, but retaining them will be really hard work and it will require a serious commitment from the agency.

Having graduated with a B.S. in Mass Communication with a concentration in Advertising, I can tell you that had I not gone to a portfolio school after graduation, I would have no idea how to get into advertising, let alone survive it. Kids without specialized training will have to fight harder. And if the agency doesn't have people willing to train and nurture them and genuinely want to help them succeed, it seems like a waste of time.

I think all young people need a mentor. And the mentor doesn't have to be a minority. Mine wasn't. I know that's probably not a breakthrough answer, but I can tell you it's what kept me in advertising. I've had the same mentor for over 6 years. She's been amazing. Without her support and guidance, who knows what would have happened to me?

And up until Apple's iPhone launch a few days ago, they were still in talks. Obviously Apple's iPhone announcement to the world came as a surprise to Cisco since they hadn't agreed anything yet. And more importantly, because Cisco just launched their own product called iphone three weeks ago. So now Cisco and Apple are going to have to duke it out in court. As a result of this news, Apple stock fell and Cisco stocks went up yesterday.

After you've come up with a stellar concept, it's really important to spend a good amount of time thinking about the overall experience. How will you captivate users for several minutes or hours? Can users see a direct link from the banner they just clicked on to where they've landed? How will you keep users engaged while the pages load? What do you want users to do once they land on a landing page? Without thinking about these questions, you'll end up with mismatched messages or worse, a user who who could possibly never click on your ad ever again.

I got to give mad props to Nintendo for coming up with the wii. As gamers age, the complexity of games and controllers will leave them wishing video games could be as simple as the good ol' days of Atari. Thankfully, Nintendo recognized that gamers do not need everything, including sick graphics and contollers with a million buttons.

By staying true to who they are and creating a low powered console that can stay on for 24 hours without draining a lot of power and a controller that is beautifully designed and as simple to use as the ipod, it's no wonder the wii is flying off the shelf just as fast as PS3. Already 600,000 units have been sold. They're currently sold out everywhere. Except on ebay, where they're going for close to $400. (The original price is $250.)

Alcohol use helps boost income: study

People who consume alcohol earn significantly more at their jobs than non-drinkers, according to a US study that highlighted "social capital" gained from drinking.

The study published in the Journal of Labor Research Thursday concluded that drinkers earn 10 to 14 percent more than teetotalers, and that men who drink socially bring home an additional seven percent in pay.

"Social drinking builds social capital," said Edward Stringham, an economics professor at San Jose State University and co-author of the study with fellow researcher Bethany Peters.

"Social drinkers are out networking, building relationships, and adding contacts to their BlackBerries that result in bigger paychecks."

The authors acknowledged their study, funded by the Reason Foundation, a libertarian think tank, contradicted research released in 2000 by the Harvard School of Public Health.

"We created our hypothesis through casual observation and examination of scholarly accounts," the authors said.

"Drinkers typically tend to be more social than abstainers."

The researchers said their empirical survey backed up the theory, and said the most likely explanation is that drinkers have a wider range of social contacts that help provide better job and business opportunities.

"Drinkers may be able to socialize more with clients and co-workers, giving drinkers an advantage in important relationships," the researchers said.

"Drinking may also provide individuals with opportunities to learn people, business, and social skills."

They also said these conclusions provide arguments against policies aimed at curbing alcohol use on university campuses and public venues.

"Not only do anti-alcohol policies reduce drinkers' fun, but they may also decrease earnings," the study said.

"One of the unintended consequences of alcohol restrictions is that they push drinking into private settings. This occurred during the Alcohol Prohibition of 1920-1933 and is happening on college campuses today. By preventing people from drinking in public, anti-alcohol policies eliminate one of the most important aspects of drinking: increased social capital."

The researchers found some differences in the economic effects of drinking among men and women. They concluded that men who drink earn 10 percent more than abstainers and women drinkers earn 14 percent more than non-drinkers.

However, unlike men, who get a seven percent income boost from drinking in bars, women who frequent bars at least once per month do not show higher earnings than women drinkers who do not visit bars.

"Perhaps women increase social capital apart from drinking in bars," the researchers said in an effort to explain the gender gap.

The term podcast, like 'radio', can mean both the content and the method of delivery.

Vodcast also known as video podcast and video on demand cast, is video delivered via RSS or Atom. It can be distributed as either a stream or file. If you let the user download the whole file, they can play it offline on a portable media player. Streaming saves users from downloading the entire file and they can also skip ahead.

Blogcast is the combination of a blog and a podcast on a website. This became popular because audio and visual content is enjoyed more than just text content. Majornelson.com was one of the first sites to embrace this.

Mobilecast is downloading and listening to podcasts on your mobile phones. Because the default podcast format is MP3, the file size is too big to be downloaded over the mobile network. So this forces podcast to re-encode into AMR or other mobile-friendly format.

VoiceCast is taking audio files and distributing them directly to a phone. These audio files can be radio programs or interviews from a podcast. Right now, this is user initiated, because users must dial a phone number for a specific podcast.

Peercast is a way of multicasting streams to the internet using peer-to-peer technology. BitTorrent is a great example of this.

Podstreaming is taking streaming radio and converting it to a podcast.

Photofeed is a web feed featuring JPEG or GIF images.

RSS Feed which stands for real simple syndication is a web feed used for web syndication. These feeds can provide summaries with content and links to full articles. The information is delivered in an XML file.

I think if anyone actually does this, you'll probably end some friendships. Think about it. Imagine receiving an email or a call that stated how much you owed, what date the money was borrowed and at what place. CP+B has done it again. Their new website for Sprite lets users write in codes that allow them to listen to Talib Kweli's newest track. And it includes a link to Talib's myspace page. I love that the Sprite logo is no where to be found on the sample page.

Robot Chicken is definitely my favorite Adult Swim program. And I think this is my favorite all time sketch from them. Yes, it's about Star Wars, but I don't think you need to be a nerd to enjoy this. (I am one, so it'll take a non-nerd to confirm this.) It's very reminiscent of Bob Newhart's old phone sketches. Like when he was Mussolini's PR agent. That one's a classic too.
